So David Blunkett wants to reschedule cannabis from Class B to Class C, and suggests a police policy of warnings and seizures, rather than arrest and charge. It is a step forward but it's no substitute for a full debate on our drug policies and drug laws. And remember why he's doing it. First because, as we've pointed out many times, there are at least several million people in this country who smoke weed, many of them nice middle class people and a good proportion of them New Labour voters. Then there are the people who don't smoke weed but have kids at universities who do. Criminalising them doesn't win votes either. Finally, there's the time and money that dragging smokers through the criminal justice system takes. And that's the real reason Mr. Blunkett's gone soft on weed. It's to give the dibble more time to get you lot and empty some prison cells for you.
